2016-17 AVID Information Meetings

November 23, 2015

As registration for next year is nearing, you are invited to attend an informational meeting at Woodbury High School or East Ridge High School to find out about the AVID elective class offered grades 9-12 in each of the three high schools in our district.

AVID is a college readiness system that has existed for over 30 years, and therefore, has a great deal of data and statistics that demonstrate its effectiveness. AVID's mission is to prepare students for college readiness and success in a global society. An AVID student will:

  • succeed in rigorous curriculum,
  • complete a college preparatory path,
  • enter mainstream activities in the school,
  • form a relationship with a professional volunteer organization,
  • be ready to enroll and succeed in a four year college,
  • become an educated, responsible participant and leader in a democratic society.

In order to ensure your student’s success, the AVID support system will provide, within an elective class, a curriculum that focuses on strong reading and writing skills, organization, study strategies for success, and research on colleges and careers. The AVID class will also provide Socratic-style tutorials two days per week.

If you or your student may be interested in being part of the AVID elective class in 2016-2017, please plan to attend one of the parent informational meetings below:

  • Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 6:30 7:30 p.m. in the East Ridge High School Media Center
  • Tuesday, December 15, 2015 from 6:30 7:30 p.m. in the Woodbury High School Media Center

Regardless of attendance boundaries, you may attend the informational session that best fits your schedule. The same information will be shared at both meetings. If you are unable to attend and your child is interested in being part of AVID, please feel free to contact Lisa Hyland (WHS), Mary Seidel (ERHS), or Maria Tol (PHS) for more information. You may also wish to read more about AVID on the avid.org website.
