College Credit & College Readiness Tests

Advanced Placement Testing (AP)

AP exams give students a chance to earn college credit at many of the nation’s colleges and universities. The credit or advanced standing earned depends upon the student's score and the policies of participating colleges. WHS gives AP exams for the courses we offer.

View the WHS Advanced Placement page for full details about AP testing offered at WHS.

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test)

What is the test? The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that provides first-hand practice for the SAT. It also gives Grade 11 students a chance to enter National Merit scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. Students will receive feedback on their strengths/weaknesses for college studies.

When is the test? The 2018 PSAT will be given at WHS on Testing Day, Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 8:30 am to noon.  This is one of three tests given that day. The other two free tests are the mock-ACT for juniors and the pre-ACT for sophomores.

Who takes the test?  This optional test is a rigorous national assessment for Grade 11 students and is used to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Programs. Sophomores may take it only as a practice test.

What is the registration procedure?  Register by logging onto: https://sowashco.feepay.com. The cost is $17.  Families that qualify for free or reduced lunch may be eligible for a fee reduction. Families must click the “Yes” button when they first create the account for this to be in the system.

The deadline for registration is September 13, 2018.

College Admissions Tests

The Accuplacer is the assessment/placement test for the Minnesota State College & Universities(MnSCU) schools. Find links to sites that offer practice Accuplacer tests under Test Prep.

The ACT and the SAT Reasoning Test are college admission tests. Most four-year colleges require that students take one of these tests, preferably in the second semester of junior year. All colleges and universities accept either the ACT or the SAT; the student need not take both. Some colleges also require the SAT Subject Tests.
