WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer visits with AVID students

October 20, 2014: Every year Gloria Shaffer, of Shaffer Productions, comes to share her story and encouragement with our AVID 9th graders. Her message includes the importance of having a plan, surrounding yourself with the right people, and never giving up. This year her husband, WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer, stopped by 4th hour AVID to visit and answer questions before heading into work. His visit was a big hit with the students, and they got to see their class picture on the 5:00 p.m. WCCO news!

AVID students participate in Service Learning

October 3, 2014: There is a service learning component incorporated into the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) curriculum for students in grades 10-12. Students are encouraged to find the needs in the community around them and commit to a volunteer organization to help address those needs. As part of this focus on service learning, a group of AVID students from Woodbury High School prepares and serves dinner at the Dorothy Day Shelter every other month for 200-300 people. Ten AVID students as well as Principal Sarah Sorenson-Wagner, AVID Coordinator Lisa Hyland, and Science Teacher Jessica Walus volunteered this month.
